Mr. Gugler died Monday at an Independence hospital following a lengthy illness. Survivors not previously reported include: a brother, Herman of Omaha. The family suggest memorials may be made to the Westminster Church. Gugler, 74, former Council Bluffs city councilman and park commissioner, died Monday at an Independence hospital after a long illness. He retired in 1956 after 54 years with the Union Pacific Railroad. Born in Omaha, Gugler moved to Council Bluffs as a young man and began working for the Union Pacific in 1902. He started as a hostler's helper, advanced to fireman soon after and became an engineer in 1910. On Park Board 12 Years A Republican, he represented the old Fifth Ward on the council for three two-year terms, beginning in 1929. He bowed out of politics here in 1951 after 12 years on the Park Board. He was a member of Excelsior Lodge 259, AF & AM, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and National Association of Retired Veteran Railway Employees, Unit 30. Survivors include: daughter, Miss June Gugler of Birmingham, Mich.; three sons, Donald W. and Harold of Columbus, Ohio, and Lester of Mount Vernon, and eight grandchildren. Gold 50-year pins were awarded to four U.P. employees. Friday's snow and sleet prevented four others from attending. Left to right were Virgil I. Cooper, Thomas J. Horan, Walter E. Gugler aid (sp) F. P. Hollenbeck, all 50-year employees; A. J. Seitz, U.P. executive vice-president, and A. G. Sims, president of the Old Timers' Clubs executive committee. Mr. Seitz made the awards. Not pictured are Charles A. Weber, A. R. Mullens, William Von Kroge, Jr., and W. B. Jones.
